.com and .cw domain name TLD

When deciding whether to choose a .com or .cw TLD (Top-Level-Domain) for your brand, it is important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Advantages .com

  • Cheap (~USD 15 per year)
  • Worldwide trusted and known
  • Direct DNS management (24/7 access to DNS management to make changes, for example when need to apply a new digital service, move website or email to another service, etc.)
  • Easy to transfer to another provider (with tens of thousands .com registrar providers worldwide, you can easily change to another provider)

Advantages .cw

  • Short
    .cw is shorter than .com
Resulting in efficient usage, the domain with .cw is easy and fast to communicate, type and write.
When the difference of length between the available .com and .cw is significant, then the .cw may be printed considerably better (either larger or with using less paper/ink)
  • High availability (many second-level domain names are available with the .cw TLD), resulting in a high chance of <yourbrand>.cw being available without the need of any other characters
  • Supporting Curaçao
When using .cw the awareness of Curaçao and the financial situation of the University of Curaçao are supported

Disadvantages .com

  • Longer
  • Less availability
Chances are big that <yourbrand>.com is not available and you will need to add more characters to it like <yourbrand>curacao.com

Disadvantages .cw

  • Expensive (~USD 55 per year) and upon registration you must register for 2 years (~USD 110)
  • Not worldwide trusted and known
Some people may think .cw is not professional and/or trustworthy
  • No direct DNS management, but with the use of a third party DNS management service this can be achieved
  • No other registrars
University of Curaçao is the only ICANN authorized seller of .cw domains
